Genetics and Society

The timeline below offers some examples of how Dr. Rabino gained the trust of scientists and access to these important, but often removed, members of our society, and was able to garner their views on sensitive issues.

For the best understanding of the development of Dr. Rabino’s work, we recommend that you read the timeline chronologically, from the earliest period, at the bottom, to the latest, at the top.

2002-2006

In the years around the turn of the century, the Human Genome Project was nearing its completion. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the practical applications of genetic science were expanding and promised to advance exponentially. Society’s abilities to grapple with the ethical issues involved in the use of the technology would be tested even more. In this context, and the surrounding controversy, Dr. Rabino asked genetics researchers what they think of two techniques, the potential of gene therapy (see Gene Therapy: Ethical Issues) and the ethical complications of genetic testing, already in use (see Genetic Testing and Its Implications).
